Window Treatment Ideas & Inspiration

Room-by-room advice on curtains, blinds and fabrics –
practical styling ideas from the people who actually make them

What is a window treatment?

A window treatment is anything fitted to a window to control light, privacy, temperature or sound — and to finish the room. That covers curtains, blinds, shutters and honeycomb cells, in any combination. The term is deliberately broad: one window might take a sheer curtain for daytime softness with a blockout blind behind it for sleep, while the window beside it takes a shutter instead of both. Window coverings and window furnishings mean the same thing — the words are interchangeable, and so are most of the decisions behind them.

The choice comes down to what the window has to do. Darkness and light control point one way, warmth and texture another, ventilation and a clean architectural line another again. Most rooms end up with a combination rather than a single answer, and the room itself usually decides — a kitchen window over the sink asks for something quite different to a west-facing living room, or a bedroom that needs to be genuinely dark rather than dim.

We make curtains and Roman blinds in our own workroom and supply the rest, which means the advice below isn’t steering you toward one product. If you already know roughly what you want, start with curtains, blinds, indoor shutters or cellular honeycomb blinds. If you’d rather work room by room, the ideas below are organised that way.

Pencil Pleat vs Pinch Pleat

Pencil pleat and pinch pleat are the two headings most people weigh up, and most assume the first is the cheaper one. It is not. A direct comparison on fullness, cost, stacking and fabric — and which one to choose for which room.

Pencil Pleat Curtains Explained

August 13, 2026
Pencil pleat is the heading most people can name, and the one most assume is the budget option. It is not — done properly it needs more fabric than a triple pinch pleat, and on Perth's large windows it carries some real disadvantages. What it is, why it costs what it does, and why almost nobody asks for it anymore.

Pinch Pleat Curtains Explained

August 12, 2026
Pinch pleat is the heading most people envisage when they picture curtains — but the difference between a good one and a flat one sits in a measurement almost no quote mentions. What single, double and triple pleats actually mean, how much fabric goes into each, and when another heading is the better answer.

August 6, 2026
