Hay Interiors is a long-established Perth curtain maker based in Nedlands, an easy drive from North Perth. We’ve been making custom made curtains for Perth homes since 1969, and North Perth — with its Federation cottages, Californian bungalows, renovations and the odd brave extension — is character-home territory we know well.
Curtains and Roman blinds are made by hand in our workroom; roller blinds, cellular blinds and shutters are made to our exact specification by trusted specialists. The person who advises you is the person who oversees the making.
recent North Perth project shows exactly what a genuine workroom is for. The client wanted festoon blinds — opulent, sculptural gathered folds, one of the most decorative window treatments there is and one of the rarest skills left in Perth. We made them by hand in our Nedlands workroom, drawing on Annie’s traditional training in Southampton, and the client’s verdict is in the review below: we were one of the only makers in Perth who could do it. Festoon blinds belong to a family of traditional styles we still make properly — London blinds, Austrian blinds and swags & tails among them. For character homes wanting something beyond the ordinary, this is where a workroom earns its name.
Our showroom and workroom sit together on Stirling Highway in Nedlands — an easy drive from North Perth, and one worth making when it’s time to choose fabric: handle full-width curtain fabrics rather than judging by swatch, and take samples home to test in your own rooms and your own light, which in a bungalow with deep eaves and a veranda is the only test that counts. Day to day, though, the service comes to you: Annie consults at your windows, everything is made or specified through our own workroom, and after installation any adjustment goes straight back to the people who made your curtains — not a reseller’s service queue.
North Perth’s streets run from well-preserved Federation and Edwardian homes to Californian bungalows and thoughtful renovations that open the back of the house to light. Period rooms deserve treatments that respect their proportions: traditional lined curtains with pinch or goblet headings, tailored pelmets, and Annie’s heritage curtains expertise for getting drop, fullness and detail right. Where a renovation has added a contemporary rear wing, layered sheer curtains and blockout curtains carry the scheme through — the front of the house keeps its history, the back gets its light, and one workroom keeps the whole home coherent.
North Perth’s housing creates a particular light problem: original front rooms shaded by verandas and deep eaves, and renovated rear extensions flooded with northern sun. One home, two opposite briefs. Front rooms can afford lighter, more open weaves that make the most of softer light; the extension needs serious glare and heat management — sunscreen roller blinds or layered sheers with blockout, and motorised curtains on quality Acmeda and Somfy systems where glazing runs high or wide. Annie assesses each room’s real light at consultation, and because we’re brand-agnostic across Warwick, Nettex, Charles Parsons and more, the fabric answer follows the room rather than a supplier’s catalogue.
“Annie and her team at Hay did a beautiful job of making and installing some festoon or (relaxed roman blinds). They were one of the only manufacturers in Perth that could do this style of blind and I love them. Annie worked with me to meet my budget and went above and beyond to deliver a high quality product and service. Highly recommend.”
