Hay Interiors is a long-established Perth curtain maker based in Nedlands, a few minutes from Peppermint Grove along Stirling Highway. We’ve been making custom made curtains for Perth homes since 1969, and Peppermint Grove — Perth’s smallest and most exclusive suburb, its grand homes sitting quietly behind generous hedges on the river — has been part of our story for decades.
Curtains and Roman blinds are made by hand in our workroom; roller blinds, cellular blinds and shutters are made to our exact specification by trusted specialists. The person who advises you is the person who oversees the making.
Peppermint Grove’s homes are among Perth’s finest — heritage properties on large river blocks, many of them built in a period when windows were dressed with serious intent: silk fabrics, ornate rods, layered treatments and trims chosen to last generations. Annie’s training in heritage houses and museums in England is exactly the background these rooms deserve, and our heritage curtains page covers the full range of traditional styles we still make properly. Many of Perth’s interior designers bring their Peppermint Grove projects to our workroom — briefing us from drawings stage on new builds and whole-home refurbishments. Homeowners coming to us directly get exactly the same making standard and the same eye at their windows.
From Peppermint Grove, our Stirling Highway workroom is a few minutes along the highway — closer than most Peppermint Grove residents are to their nearest supermarket. That proximity matters at every stage: the showroom and workroom is worth visiting to handle full-width curtain fabrics properly and take samples home to test in your own rooms; measurements and fitting are quick to coordinate; and after installation, any adjustment is a short trip for us rather than a scheduled call-out. At this level of home, the workroom being next door is not a convenience — it’s part of the standard.
The best measure of a curtain maker is not a single job but a relationship. A client on View Street has trusted Hay Interiors for more than twenty years — and their windows tell the story of how taste moves. When they first came to us, the brief was unambiguously grand: silk fabrics, ornate curtain rods, decorative trims and a layered, formal look that suited the home’s architecture and the era’s style. More recently, tastes have shifted — as they do — toward something more quietly modern: soft sheer curtains with simpler curtain headings, cleaner lines, the same quality of making in a less demonstrative register. The home looks different; the standard is unchanged. That continuity — one maker across two decades and two completely different aesthetics — is something a showroom cannot offer.
Peppermint Grove’s homes span every chapter of Perth’s architectural ambition, and the curtain treatments that suit them span just as wide. At the formal end: swags & tails, silk and damask, goblet headings, decorative pelmets and curtain headings & styles that belong to a tradition Annie was trained in properly. At the contemporary end: wide-hem sheers on minimal tracks, roller blinds that disappear into the ceiling, and motorised curtains on quality Acmeda and Somfy systems for large glazing. Both are right, and both come out of the same workroom. The only wrong answer in Peppermint Grove is a treatment that doesn’t suit the room — and that’s exactly what the consultation is for.
“I highly recommend Hay Interiors. They have provided curtains and upholstery for us since we moved into our home in Dalkeith in the late 70’s. Since the initial swags and tails, pelmets and sheers, fantastic quality and they lasted the years. Recently remodelled our house and Annie was there again for us with her knowledge of the new trends and she has given us exactly what we wanted. They are a lovely team, great workmanship and so pleasurable to deal with.” — Fred C, Dalkeith
